Transforming Decay Into Vibrant Horizons

BLIGHT DEMOLITION &

URBAN RENEWAL

CLEARING
PATHWAYS FOR
OUR FUTURE

We're on a mission to stabilize and revitalize our city's landscape and rebuild the community. With a deep commitment to combating blight and fostering development, we've been making a positive impact for over three and a half decades. Co-Co-founded in 1988 by John J. George, Felix B. Wright III, and Albert E. Mack, our nonprofit organization is dedicated to not only tearing down blighted structures but also constructing new ones, restoring existing homes, providing essential services, and nurturing a brighter future for Detroiters.

OUR STORY

In the heart of a city facing blight and decline, John George took a stand. Fueled by his frustration with crime and degradation, he founded Detroit Blight Busters to make a difference. It all started with a small group of passionate individuals who came together to board up windows in vacant homes, effectively pushing out drug dealers.

This act of community unity laid the foundation for what DBB would become—a beacon of hope and transformation.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Over the past three decades, Detroit Blight Busters has achieved remarkable milestones that have breathed new life into our neighborhoods:

Housing For The Community: Housed more than 1,000 Detroiters, and created more than 400 new homeowners, offering a fresh start and renewed hope

Abandoned Home Demolition: Demolished over 600 blighted homes, clearing the way for revitalization.

House Restoration: Painted and restored 700 properties, bringing color and vibrancy back to our streets.

Secured Blighted Properties: Secured 400 structures by boarding them up, preventing further deterioration.

Rebuilding the Community: Renovated 200 buildings, turning eyesores into assets for the community.

New Growth: Built over 100 new homes, providing safe and modern living spaces for families.
